Gicon Château, in Chusclan, which stands at the summit of a rocky headland, was built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa. The site, which had been totally abandoned, was bought by the Chusclan wine producers in 1973.
The old feudal castle, complete with its keep, was built on the site of a Celtic acropolis, with a Gallo-Roman calade, the sloping stairway that leads up to the entrance.

The entire site, with its watchtowers, lodgings and fortified house, has been undergoing renovation works since 1987. The 11th-century Chapel of Saint Madeleine features on the tour of Romanesque chapels in the Gard.

Visitors to the Château are welcome. A tarmac road leads up to the chapel (signed from the co-operative's premises) and then you can take the footpath up to the Château. Further information: if you are interested in a guided tour, please contact the cave for further details.
